BIS weighs mandatory silver hallmarking; rollout to be gradual across complex market
Bureau of Indian Standards is studying infrastructure and regulatory readiness before making silver hallmarking mandatory, DG Sanjay Garg said. Voluntary since 2005, silver hallmarking jumped to 59 lakh articles in 2025-26 from 32 lakh in 2024-25 across 230 AHCs, with HUID tracking from September 2025.
